In its youth, Fort
Worth was a rough-and-tumble frontier town, dusty and lawless, home to the brace
and the brawling, the soldier, the frontiersman, the outlaw.
Today, Fort Worth, one of the largest cities in Texas and the 18th
largest city in the United States, is a destination shaped by its revitalized
downtown, a world-renowned cultural arts district, beautifully preserved
Western-heritage and major-league attractions.
A trip to Fort
Worth is not complete without seeing the famed Stockyards National Historic
District.
Stockyards
Station: Stockyards Station was once the
biggest and busiest cattle, horse, mule, hog and sheep marketing center in the
Southwest, where more than 160 million head of livestock were sold. Today, the
125-acre Stockyards National Historic District attracts over a million visitors
a year and is home to restaurants, hotels, saloons, galleries, shopping and
family style entertainment, as well as the Fort Worth Herd, the world's only
daily cattle drive on their twice-daily drive down Exchange Avenue.
While at
Stockyards Station, you will want to visit the Texas Cowboy Hall of Fame, see
the "World's Larges Honky-Tonk" – Billy Bob's of Texas (this venue
plays host to country music's top performers and live bull riding at the indoor
arena), and stop by the White Elephant Saloon, an authentic Western watering
hole. The entire historic district
is recognized as much for family entertainment and shopping as for saloons and
boot-scootin'.
Downtown
Sundance Square: Sundance Square, a
20-block area downtown, is Fort Worth's shopping and entertainment district that
is restored to its original Victorian beauty, filled with restaurants, theaters,
shops, museums and galleries is a success story few cities can boast.
This area is in walking distance from the Convention Center.
